Sydney<\/a> is one of the greatest cities in the world. It has amazing beaches, scenic shorelines, World Heritage sites, and top-notch dining. <\/p>\n It\u2019s a large city, and it\u2019s very spread out, meaning that it can be hard to figure out where to stay. I’ve stayed in every area of the city over my many years of visiting here.<\/p>\n Each area of Sydney has its own vibe and highlights. <\/p>\n In this post, I’ll break down each neighborhood and give you suggested places to stay for each of them. <\/p>\n Best Places to Stay in The Rocks<\/strong>:<\/p>\n BUDGET: Sydney Harbour YHA<\/a> – This hostel is in a great location in the old colonial area of the city, offering views of the harbor and the Opera House. It has all the modern comforts of a good hostel, including a large self-catering kitchen, spacious communal areas, an on-site grocery store, coffee bar, and a large rooftop terrace. This isn’t really a party hostel, though, but rather a great place for travelers looking for a quiet stay. It’s great for families too!<\/p>\n MID-RANGE: The Australian Heritage Hotel<\/a> – This historic hotel offers quaint rooms with a vintage feel and all the standard amenities you’d expect from a mid-range hotel. To top it all off, it’s also home to one of Sydney’s oldest pubs, where you can enjoy live music alongside an all-Australian selection of craft beer!<\/p>\n LUXURY: Four Seasons Sydney<\/a> – Offering incredible views of the harbor and the city \u2014 as well as sumptuous luxury \u2014 this is a great choice for anyone looking to visit Sydney in style. With a state-of-the-art fitness center and wellness center and spa, you’ll be able to get pampered while you enjoy all that Sydney has to offer. Best Places to Stay in Surry Hills<\/strong>:<\/p>\n BUDGET: Big Hostel<\/a> – This hostel offers free breakfast, free Wi-Fi, free luggage storage, and late checkout \u2014 everything the budget traveler needs! They also have a fully equipped kitchen and promote eco-friendly practices (they have a service for donating old clothing and promote energy conservation and recycling).<\/p>\n MID-RANGE: 57Hotel<\/a> – This modern hotel is in a great location close to the central train station as well as bustling Oxford Street. The contemporary designed rooms come with a flatscreen TVs and a desk, and the spacious bathrooms boast rain showers as well as eco-friendly toiletries. There’s a complimentary continental breakfast as well as a Nespresso machine in the lobby for whenever you need a pick-me-up. <\/p>\n LUXURY: Crystalbrook Albion<\/a> – This luxury hotel is located in a heritage building that was once a former convent. It was redesigned in 2018 to become a boutique hotel with interiors inspired by the 1920s and 1970s. It’s right near Central Station and only a short drive from Chinatown and Paddy’s Market. The hotel also has a rooftop terrace with a garden, lounge, and an honor bar. Best Places to Stay in Coogee<\/strong>:<\/p>\n BUDGET: Mad Monkey Coogee Beach<\/a> – This is a great budget hostel located right on the beach. They have a cool co-working space and there are plenty of bars and restaurants around as well. It’s not fancy by any means, but it gets the job done! \nJust north of Sydney\u2019s Central Business District and on the harbor, this neighborhood offers great views along the waterfront. There are numerous historic buildings in the area, including several pubs. The Rocks Markets is open each weekend, selling all kinds of treasures, including arts and crafts, jewelry, and tasty treats. The area has tons of stellar restaurants, museums, and entertainment venues, which helps explain its popularity with tourists.<\/p>\n
\n <\/p>\nWhere to Stay for Local Life: Surry Hills<\/h3>\n

\nSoutheast of the Central Business District, leafy Surry Hills has traditionally been known as the best place in Sydney for fashion. The area is perfect for travelers who want to shop \u2018til they drop, but its appeal is much broader than that. There are lots of unique, creative dining options, and many old warehouses have been transformed into classy art galleries and gorgeous homes. The area is perfect for young travelers, foodies, and those wanting to experience Oxford Street, the longtime Gay Capital of Sydney.<\/p>\n
\n <\/p>\nWhere to Stay for a Local Beach: Coogee<\/h3>\n

\nThis little area with the funny name is perfect for travelers who want a beach vibe but not all the craziness of Bondi Beach. This neighborhood is an eastern suburb of Sydney, but you can get to town on public transit in less than half an hour. Coogee has a youthful and family-friendly feel. If your trip calls for a lot of beach time, this is a great option. There\u2019s super snorkeling nearby at Gordons Bay, and be sure to check out the Wylie Baths \u2014 amazing rock pools perfect for swimming.<\/p>\n
