This looks very much like the thoughts of people who visit Thailand as tourists. I live in Pattaya and often get a very cool reception from Thai people. Very often I get nasty comments and sometimes verbal abuse. I am not alone. Thais give it their all when they see what they sum up to be a tourist. When they see someone they recognise as a local, things can be very different. Especially from the girls who work in the bars. It’s not just me, it has been observed by many. “You know too much, you come here too many times” even the immigration laws on obtaining repeated visas now reflect as much. Why? I seek the opinion of THAI people, not that of foreigners to Thailand. The issue is not common to all Thai people, but most certainly to the bar girls working in Pattaya. Not so much Bangkok.

I am really hoping that a Thai person can answer a question that I have. I don’t seek the opinion of foreigners to Thailand. Why do so many Thais dislike foreigners who live in Thailand, compared to novice tourists. OK, part of the answer lies in new tourists spending more money generally. Lady drinks by the armful etc. However, if I walk down e.g. Soi 6 in Pattaya, after having been back there for several months, 80 percent of the girls will blank me. If I go to another bar and am recognised as being a local, the reception I get is rather weak. It is not just me. Many others get the same reaction. Pattaya is particularly bad for this. Bangkok is not so bad. There, if you are recognised, it tends not to destroy a girl,s enthusiasm towards you. Also, why do so many Thais dislike foreigners who have made the effort to learn about their culture etc. oh, you know too much, not good! In Pattaya I often get verbal abuse from the girls who work in the tourist areas. I notice that most other foreigners who live in Pattaya just tend to mostly avoid those areas. Possibly for the same reason. What is it about? The reaction in AGOGO bars is strangly the opposite. Showing some knowledge of culture and language seems to be seen as a positive thing. What on earth is this all about? Any Thai people who can answer this? I suspect it might have something related to why they don’t like Thai men to go to AGOGO, though I cannot get a clear answer as to why this is either. Many Thai people like it if a foreigner learns the language and their culture, but the bar girls? It’s like a massive turn off, irrespective of you spending the same money.

I agree about the many good things Thailand can offer. I especially love the food. My favorite dishes is Massaman curry and Tom Yam soup.

I love Thailand culture. I was there 2 years ago. That was one of the best experience of my life. Mostly what I liked was Thailand’s dish called Som Tom. It was great!

Organizing my trip now for July. Will have a day or two in BKK, then want to head to a
more remote beach for a few days before heading to Chaing Mai. Since it is going to be
rainy season which beach do you suggest I travel to? I will be with my 2 sons, 18 and 15.
I have been looking around Koh Samui but still too touristy…?

I’ve just got back after 2 months in Thailand and saw lots of different sides to it. If you are going have fun, But be prepared for two things:

1) yes it’s been over developed in some places but you will still fall in love with this country because it’s so different to anywhere else in the world. On returning to the West you may experience a depression where all you can think about is how you can live there full time. The lure of this country IS that strong.

2) it’s extremely easy to fall in love with a Thai hooker who you think is special (they all are) and makes you happy. It’s heartbreaking when you are forced to break up with them because deep down you know they are probably just going to bleed your cash remotely and keep working anyway and the relationship has such a low chance of working long term no matter how much you want to ‘save her’ and follow your heart.

I loved Thailand but before I go back I will prepare myself mentally for these scenarios as both happened to me!

I just visited Thailand last month, Oct 2105, and the 2 weeks I was there left me wishing I had spent more time in a country where I truly enjoyed my visit. The food is absolutely the best. I lived off the vegetables alone, pad pakruam, and a wonderful grilled fish called pal pao. My very 1st meal in Thailand was sumtam, a combination of the best spicy seasonings w/tomatoes and papaya. I ate sumtam everyday as well. I recommend visiting Thailand, and I will return in the near future. I loved the beaches along Khanom and Schichon. Absolutely majestic in all their power and beauty.
