This is such a wonderful read. My exact feelings when I discover places – not really the off beaten ones but the ones which are actually quite ordinary and no one writes about. Usually happens with me when I take take the city transport pass and get off a random tram or train stop. Sometime I just stumble on a beautiful park or beach or vantage point or market which I have never read about, which only locals frequent. And the feeling of discovery is so awesome.

While I agree there is much more adventure to be found by going “off the beaten path”, isn’t that practically a cliche by now? Most people do not have the luxury of time to explore what’s outside of the main tourists tracks. When I went to London last year, I wanted so badly to feel like a “real traveler”. I spent so much time trying to find the best “local” spots, that I missed a lot of the best famous sights. That is something I regret. I think there is too much pressure these days to get travel right, and too much judgement over what makes one a real traveler. Every time I choose to go on a trip, I am typically also choosing to overcome some sort of fear or insecurity. That is what makes travel meaningful for me, even though I don’t usually make it to an obscure location.

This happened to be the perfect read today as I sat down for a little bit to catch up on some travel blogs and wondered if I should be seeking out more information to further plan my trip to Ireland. I’ve got our tickets, and the boyfriend is all about winging it (which I’m okay with) but I wondered if I shouldn’t do just a bit more reading and planning for what I hope to do and see. But this is a great reminder that my main goal is to experience the culture and with that in mind, I’ll best get off the main roads by just waiting to see where the side roads lead with no real plan in mind. Looking forward to picking up this book!

This is the kind of travel that I like — granted chances are you won’t be discovering some offbeat never-before-seen sight on the road, but experiencing it at your personal pace and time will become unique memories, personal and yours to keep forever. Even in jaded, “must-see” popular destinations I’ve had that kind of experiences sometimes. Unfortunately for this you need some leeway to throw your cares to the wind and let yourself free time to discover unexpected things, something at odds with the usual hurried, super-tightly-scheduled, checklist-driven travel plans many get forced to do.
