It can be difficult to approach people if you are introvert, but like you said, it is doable if you overcome the fear. On another hand, I travel with my wife. It is great in a way that you are never alone, however we don’t use the hostels anymore and it is difficult to meet new people (other than on a boat trip or something). I have noticed that people who travel in couples tend to stick more to their partners. I guess it is a little awkward to walk up to another couple with random questions on the street 🙂

Great article Matt, My wife is my traveling side kick and it is definitely great to have someone by your side. But, we definitely have met some other great people who were alone on their travels and we ended up enjoying new adventures together. (We both like to start conversations with new people so it makes it easy for us to connect with others) But if you are an introvert it can definitely be a battle that can stop you from creating new relationships and fun times. I advise you to take the leap and open up a new conversation with someone new whether its the locals or other travelers.

You know what, I have to admit that some of my greatest adventures in the wilderness have been when I’ve gone alone. The very first days were a bit awkward and i felt a bit lonely but I had to force myself to meet people and try new things. It usually turns into great experiences. I’m not going to deny that it’s always nice to have someone with you, but I don’t think people should shy away from traveling alone. It’s a great way to make new friends all over the world.

Reality is not as bad, If you find yourself willing to spend the night in those affordable inns, start a new day early or simply still comfortable when you being alone, you can be assured go solo travel without anyone accompany. It’s really simple!

Great article Matt. The one thing that always helped me personally is connecting with people that are into the same sports as me. I’m really into water sports and usually find it pretty easy to connect with people on that level. You mentioned meetup.com. Definitely one of my favorite ways to connect with people!

I think sometimes it is not a matter of whether we dare to initiate conversations with other people or not, but rather than other travellers are with their own friends or significant other. So in that case, being too social might make things awkward and also you just don’t wanna interrupt them or feel that bad being the third wheel the whole time.

Hey Matt,

I was thinking about you as I traveled solo to Iceland a few weeks ago (my first solo non-business trip). I was sick though and I think this is not a good experience to base future solo travel trips on. I did what I wanted to do and then I’d go back to my hotel early and sleep. I noticed that many people (not all) like to stay in cliques. I just didn’t have the energy to attempt to approach them. Do you approach or move on to those that appear a little more open to interaction?
